Black Mirror: "USS Callister" January 21, 2018 3:11 pm RobVG

The best way to describe Black Mirror is- disturbing. It capitalizes on the dark and twisted side of human nature, things you’ll refuse to accept about yourself or anyone you know, but without them, the entertainment industry would be doomed.

The main theme is how we interact with cellular and computer technology, and the ever growing impact of social media. More than one episode deals with uploading and downloading of human consciousness to a digital format. In one case it’s used to animate an “instant human”- just add water.

The “USS Callister” puts a slightly different twist on it. Your DNA is sampled to completely model your online game character for a game created and controlled by a developer with few social skills and hell bent on revenge for the perceived cruelty of his employees.

In this episode, the quality of the writing and the CG is on par with any TV sci-fi out there. And for the first time it didn’t leave me asking, “why do I watch this shit?”

But if you work in tech, you will not want to leave your coffee cup anywhere near your boss…
