I’ve been catching up on some classics lately — something I added to the bucket list once I finally accepted that my time on this Earth isn’t infinite.

Last year I burned through the entire Space Odyssey series. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the story, and for the first time I actually understand the psychedelic ending of the movie. One of the coolest parts of the books was discovering that HAL’s consciousness survives and ends up traveling alongside Dave Bowman’s ethereal self.

I’ve also been thoroughly enjoying Apple TV’s Foundation series, and I recently found Prelude to Foundation at a thrift store while hunting for Dune. It dives deep into Hari Seldon’s quest to develop psychohistory, and that final reveal about Demerzel’s true identity gave me chills. That alone pushed Asimov’s entire robot series onto my reading list.

I downloaded the original Foundation trilogy for my Kindle and finished the first book a few nights ago. It feels like watching a 3‑dimensional chess match of political prowess. It’s good — and it definitely has its moments — but I actually enjoyed Prelude more. I’m a few chapters into Foundation and Empire now, and so far it’s on par with the first book.

Since I know you guys are all well‑read, I’m hoping you can help me expand my list of must‑reads — sci‑fi, literary classics, poetry, history, whatever you think belongs on a “read before you die” list.

Oh, and Project Hail Mary was an absolute delight, and the movie adaptation was fantastic.

I apologize for even asking, but it’s widely reported the US is losing its war with Iran. In 10 weeks of fighting, the US has killed 3600 people, just over half are civilians. If we were to attack indiscriminately (like Trump would do if he could) the war would have ended already. I don’t know what the aftermath would look like, but it would be done, for a while…

I bought Asimov’s Foundation trilogy and just finished the first book. There’s a relevant quote from Salvor Hardin before he handled the first ‘Seldon Crisis’ by withdrawing tech support from his adversary:

Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent

The US has no military bases in Isreal except for a missile defense radar installation inside an Israeli air force base. It’s not about oil. The greatest thing they can offer the US is expertise in the tech sector. In that regard their highly valuable. They also provide intelligence gathering.

We funded and co-developed the “Golden Dome”. We’ve given Isreal a total of over 300 billion dollars, 25b over the last three years.

If everyone’s right that Iran was no threat to the US, why are we fighting this war for Isreal.

I’ve read several books on the SR-71, including “Radar Man”. It’s rather insulting that there are so many claims that it was developed using “alien technology”. Building it was an inevitable progression of existing technologies, starting with the ME-262.
From the radar-absorbing leading-edge material and its geometry, to the fuel that was used, the material science involved wasn’t a giant leap and didn’t require “off-world” sourcing.
Skunkworks has hinted that the SR72 will be revealed soon. Although I’m really excited to see it, we’ll never again see another book written by pilots.
