A meditation on the phony ballot box shuffle October 16, 2020 8:50 am ER

The Orange County fake ballot box maneuver was a form of voter suppression. By making it easy for voters in predominantly Republican areas to vote, it made it that much harder for people in Democratic precincts to unload their ballots. Granted, Democrats living in Orange County, or who worship in fundamentalist churches would not be affected, it still statistically helps the GOP. Since this tends to favor Republican voters more than Democratic ones, it results in a net advantage to the Right. The GOP can always say that they are doing nothing to prevent Democrats from putting their ballots in those boxes, just like they can say they are doing nothing to prevent Democrats from driving across town to vote when Republicans have conveniently located polls in their neighborhoods. That’s how voter suppression works, you don’t prevent your opponents from voting, you just make it harder, more inconvenient, less safe.

But why stop there? Once you have been able to get away with that, the next step is to put phony ballot boxes in predominantly Democratic neighborhoods, and collecting those ballots and simply making them disappear. Oh sure, the GOP will be able to say “we have no way of knowing if those are Dem or Rep ballots”, but we all know what a deliberate and cynical lie that is.

This is what the Republican Party has come to. Its not just in local elections or in specific races, (Yeah, I don’t deny Democrats have stolen elections too). It is now Party Policy. Anything goes if it sticks it to the Liberals. I have never agreed with Republican policy, but never have I see them adopt this kind of bald-faced cheating before on such a widespread scale (except when they did it to blacks in the South). Not either of the Bushes, not Reagan, not even Nixon. This is all on Trump.

And no, I’m not accusing Trump of instructing of ordering his operatives to do this, there is no paper trail of memos or emails or phone calls that can be used as evidence against him. He has done it the same way he has sent encouragement to racists and fascists, the violent; by setting a tone, by using rhetoric, by dog whistle and code word. “These Liberals are not just mistaken, they are evil. Anything goes, whatever it takes to defeat them is fully justified.” And political defeat is not enough, they must be destroyed, crushed, humiliated. Anything is fair game as long as it helps to stop them.

What do you expect from a man who dry-humps Old Glory and holds the Bible upside-down in a photo-op.
