More ice news, snowflakes September 23, 2020 7:01 am ER

Time series for the last 5 years of Arctic Sea Ice Extent, compared to the time series of the record low 2012 season and the overall averages.

.

The entire Arctic sea ice extent history of the satellite era broken down into three distinct 14 year periods. The ice continues to vanish, although it appears the rate at which it is vanishing is moderating. My guess why this is is because the old accumulating multi-year ice is mostly gone, while what we see now is mostly the thin ice newly replaced every winter. The high volatility (variability) of the minima in these last 14 years supports this hypothesis.

.

The three lowest ice minima (in order) occurred in 2007, 2020 and 2012. And every single year of the last 14 the ice minimum has been lower than every single year of the previous 28.
