What is wrong with “Conservatives”? This is a lot more than just adherence to certain political philosophies, its more like a cult.

Like all religious fanatics, they don’t just believe in a doctrine, they are convinced anyone who doesn’t is evil, twisted, perverse.
For them, Liberals don’t just have an exaggerated belief in the health benefits of wearing a mask (which might even be, to some extent, true). No, even the slightest hint of wanting to wear a mask is evidence of treason, sedition, hatred of one’s country, Communism, atheism.

What we’re witnessing is the transferring of religious fundamentalist logic, evangelical theology to political thought and to cultural identity. And I don’t blame Donald Trump for this. He is a profoundly irreligious man, and not a particularly ideological one either. But I do blame him for recognizing this mental defect in Conservatives and for cultivating it as a recruiting and organizing principle.

No, not all Conservatives are this crazy or this stupid. Most of them, I’m sure, are perfectly aware that what you think about wearing a mask has absolutely nothing to do with your political philosophy. But that doesn’t stop them from following and defending a man, and a movement, that promotes and revels in these ideas.

This reveals a mercenary cynicism of truly cosmological proportions.
