Larsen C ice shelf about to lose %10 May 31, 2017 5:15 pm RL

http://www.projectmidas.org/blog/another-step-closer/

The rift has now fully breached the zone of soft ‘suture’ ice originating at the Cole Peninsula and there appears to be very little to prevent the iceberg from breaking away completely.

When it calves, the Larsen C Ice Shelf will lose more than 10% of its area to leave the ice front at its most retreated position ever recorded; this event will fundamentally change the landscape of the Antarctic Peninsula. We have previously shown that the new configuration will be less stable than it was prior to the rift, and that Larsen C may eventually follow the example of its neighbour Larsen B, which disintegrated in 2002 following a similar rift-induced calving event.

Meanwhile its looking more and more likely that we will turn our backs on the Paris agreement- and the rest of the world…

The prime minister of India said it would be a “crime” to spoil the environment for future generations.

Finland’s prime minister said climate change won’t be reversed “by closing your eyes.”

In Berlin, the head of the European Commission lectured Mr. Trump that “not everything in international agreements is fake news.”

Only two nations — Syria and Nicaragua — oppose the climate accord.

During the campaign, Mr. Trump dismissed the scientific consensus that rising temperatures are caused primarily by fossil fuels like coal and oil.

But even most major American businesses — from Exxon to Apple — support the agreement.
