Remember when the Conservatives vilified the French for not supporting the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq?  When we even changed the name of “French fries” to “freedom fries”?  When Dick Cheney said the war would cost the US $20 billion which would rapidly repaid by Iraqi oil revenues?  And George W. Bush told Pat Robertson that no American lives would be lost?

 

Well, the French were smart, especially as compared to their cross-channel rivals, the Brits.  Believing Dick Cheney or George W. Bush was folly, they lied in ways which were orders of magnitude beyond anything done before.

 

Here’s Cheney’s $20 billion.

 

“The final bill for U.S. military involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan could be as much as $4.4 trillion, according to a comprehensive report Tuesday.

“In the 10 years since American troops were sent into Afghanistan, the federal government has already spent $2.3 trillion to $2.7 trillion, say the authors of the study by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies.”
And, by the way, it’s still running.  All to subsidize oil companies.
