The resulting graphic will print out the sea ice extent curves for any year indicated, just click at right on the year to display any one you want. For starters, I would suggest looking at the curves, every 5 or ten years apart, and watch the North Polar ice cap melt away, right before your eyes.

The black line is the average for the last 35 years, the gray band is plus/minus two standard deviations about the mean. The default display of the graph shows the ice curve for this year, 2015, and the dashed line curve for the record low ice year of 2012.

Place the cursor on any point on any curve to see the ice extent for that date. Click on that point to see a satellite image of the polar region on that date.
