Joe's Crab Shack Chain . . . May 8, 2014 7:19 am DanS

Freakishly High Levels of Deadly Fat Found in This Restaurant Chain’s Food
A food safety watchdog group warns against eating at this popular seafood chain.

Leah Zerbe | editor RodaleNews.com

Eating any level of trans fat is bad for you, but meals served up at Joe’s Crab Shack chain restaurants contain especially dangerous levels of the heart-killing synthetic fat, according to the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Despite promising to end the use of trans fat 7 years ago and touting a “we use zero trans fat oil” disclaimer on the menu, the seafood chain is still using a partially-hydrogenated margarine-butter blend with obscenely high levels of the trans fat, a manmade substance blamed for 20,000 heart attacks a year.

Here are some shockingly high trans fat levels in Joe’s Crab Shack Meals:

• Joe’s Pasta-laya is advertised as “shrimp and andouille sausage cooked in a garlic butter sauce full of mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes and onions served over penne pasta,” but hides 14 grams of trans fat—that’s about the most trans fat a person should eat in an entire week, according to the American Heart Association.
• The chain’s Crab Cake Dinner contains 14 grams trans fat, while the Redfish Pontchartrain contains 16 grams.
• The Steampots at Joe’s Crab Shack all have at least a week’s worth of trans fat, thanks to the side of dipping “butter.”
• The KJ Steampot, named for its “light Kendall-Jackson wine sauce,” and Joe’s Great Barrier Steampot each have 25 grams of trans fat.

More.

FYI, and be careful out there, folks.
