When was the last time you visited your local Army-Navy Surplus store? January 4, 2014 5:52 am ER

For starters, there is no military surplus gear there at all. Strange, since we’ve been fighting somewhere in the world almost continuously for the last century. You’d think if you needed a webbing magazine pouch for a .45, or a bayonet sheath for your Garand, that would be the logical place to pick one up.

Most of the gear isn’t remotely military, or even paramilitary. There’s lots of camping and outdoor stuff, and biker acccessories, and what I like to call militia memorabilia, such as ersatz Nazi insignia and plastic Stahlhelms. You can even get “fashion” items there, like camo underwear, and T-shirts with patriotic sayings on them.

And almost all the merchandise seems to come from China.
