Rise in Indonesian sea floor November 24, 2012 3:43 pm RobVG

I’m not going to make any judgments about the reports, I just wanted to look into it and do some ‘research’.

Indonesia is a fairly tight-knit archipelago, so any sea floor rise must be localized or land elevations would be rising too. The Youtube videos I watched claimed increases of 250′ and 850′ at a specific buoy. I didn’t see the 2000′ claim but I’ll use it anyway for fun.

Let’s say it’s the beginning of a 2000′ tall super volcano with a base 100 miles across. If you were walking across the sea floor you notice about a 2′ rise over the length of a football field as you climb the slope. Based on a sea level rise of 60m if all the Antarctic ice melted, you’d only see an increase in sea-level bout a ½ inch due to the ‘bulge’.

The data is coming from NOAA ‘s National Data Buoy Center and the area in question can be found here, between Australia and Indonesia. There are 3 buoys about 500 miles apart and the one that started the buzz is #53046. The other 2 buoys show no anomaly. 53046 has been taken offline and it’s probably safe to assume that it’s on the fritz.

Data from 53046 – October 1 to November 1
