A Marshall Plan for Gaza? August 2, 2024 6:57 pm ER

Excuse me, but I had to riff on this one.

Does anyone really think Israel is going to allow any economic aid and reconstruction to a state sworn to destroy them? Israel won’t allow itself to even recognize an independent Palestinian State on its borders. Even if Palestine should suddenly become friendly and cooperative, there is no guarantee they’ll stay that way, and there will always be too many on both sides who will always distrust the other.

The Arab/Islamic world? No way, they need trouble in the Levant because it distracts their own people from the fact they are governed by corrupt autocracies, religious fanatics and medieval monarchs. They whine about poor Palestine but have they ever really helped them (other than sell them weapons and stir up trouble)?

America? As long as the Redneck Right and the Jewish Lobby have inroads in Congress no US administration would dare reconstruct Gaza (or the West Bank). The former see Israel as crucial to their apocalyptic End Time fantasies, the latter still are obsessed by the Holocaust (and can anyone really blame them for that?).

The Russians, Chinese, Iranians? Not bloody likely, they want America in trouble, why and how is irrelevant.

Europe? Maybe. They’ll try to buy peace and tranquility, even if only for a short time, they’re too scared of war to risk it again. But then again, maybe recent events in Ukraine have convinced them you can’t pay off a bully indefinitely.

The Pacific rim dragons (Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, maybe India? They won’t get involved or even pick sides. They know better than to get dragged into white peoples’ wars.

South America, Africa? The former will love watching the Gringos bite off more than they can chew. The latter still haven’t forgiven 300 years of European racism, colonization and imperialism. Both of them are too fucked up to get their shit together about anything.

What about the Palestinians themselves? Again, not bloody likely. Those poor bastards are so demoralized and divided that they can’t shake the thugs and bullies that have exploited legitimate Palestinian concerns for their own personal ambition and accumulation of money and power.

The Palestinian issue will only be resolved by violence, and no matter how that plays out, or who comes out on top, a lot of innocent people are going to suffer horribly. Maybe St John was right after all. Armageddon will begin in the middle east.
