Countries nationalizing foreign leases on their own territory is not all that uncommon especially when a nation seeks to assert control over vital sectors and strategic resources like oil, gas, and minerals. It’s bad for future foreign investment prospects for that nation, but it’s also a risk corporations are aware of when taking leases in potentially politically unstable nations.

If Trump’s threats are realized, then yeah, we don’t have a leg to stand on.
As an aside, there were decades left on the leases when Venezuela nationalized the oil industry in ’76. In ’07 they did it again- by gunpoint. Their hands aren’t exactly clean.

Venezuela is bad because Trump has said America will run the country and take control of their oil exports. That will be accomplished by military intimidation, which ultimately could lead to permanent boots on the ground. But beyond that, the mere threat of military force to take Greenland disqualifies America from any criticism of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. If we have “the right” to take over territory in our backyard, so does he. If Trump actually goes through with a military takeover of Greenland that would be morally even worse since America would be attacking a nation that is our long time friend and military ally.

I’m not just talking about Venezuela, but also the threats to the territorial integrity Greenland, Panama and other nations. America now has absolutely no standing whatsoever to criticize Putin for launching his horrific war against Ukraine. He is merely “intervening in his backyard.” We have no argument against China taking Taiwan if it chooses, claiming disputed islands in WestPac, or even potentially kidnapping leaders of nations in its region. The law based world order is dead, and we have returned to an era where might is right.

We are totally fucked.
