Conquest, racism and injustice have always existed, in some form or another, since the beginning of time, in all places and among all peoples. But at least, the general trend has been for progress. What we are seeing in the US now is backsliding on a colossal scale. Today we recognize the anniversary of our own Beer Hall Putsch, or perhaps our Reichstag Fire. And as I’m sure our friends north of the border can see, things are deteriorating in a big way. Besides, Canada will soon have other problems. It is situated BETWEEN Russia and the US.

There’s always been a strong fascist streak in the American psyche. Not all Americans are like that. Not even most Americans. But enough of them are to make me very, very sad. I’m glad I’m an old man, because I have little confidence in our future.

I have a great deal of respect and admiration for the Canadian nation and people (its what the USA would look like with no guns, decent health care and no history of institutionalized racism. But there is little Canada can do to avoid being overwhelmed by events in the USA. And there is even less it can do to influence them.

The only international agents capable of deliberately affecting events in the United States are Russia, China and possibly Iran.
