When I was younger, and poorer, I lived on hot dogs and other high nitrate foods. Had headaches all the time. Also drank gallons of soda drinks. Now that I rarely eat those foods my head doesn’t hurt.

Men are apparently somewhat more likely to get them than women- but that is one area where there is progress in equality of the sexes- the percentage of women getting Cluster Headaches (CH) is increasing. CHs also tend to present differently in men and women- in women they are more likely to share the usual symptoms of migraines… and thus may be more easily mistaken for migraines by doctors.

IF you have CH then there is a good chance the treatment could be cheap, simple and extremely effective- Verapamil is cheap and pretty harmless as medications go. It has a LONG history of use as a blood pressure medication… its use in treatment of CH was an accidental discovery – a beneficial side effect. It doesn’t work for everyone- for some people Oxygen therapy can stop them if done early enough… others need Imitrex injectors… and some people find only hallucinogenic mushrooms help.

Obviously, actual doctors should be consulted before taking any action- my post is just my personal experience…If the symptoms I described sound similar to what you have then the next step would be to bring it up with an actual doctor.
