I have a LOT of coworkers that lost elderly relatives to this pandemic, but it looks like my family will escape the worst outcome of COVID. They warned me that the side effects might be worse than the first, but considering I experienced no side effects the first time, that won't be a problem. I'd actually like to experience some mild symptoms, since that would signify that the vaccine is provoking my immune system, so I'm zeroing in on little things like a sniffle as a major portent of good things to come. Pollyanna to the end. Got poke #2 yesterday, three weeks to the minute. Sure, I'm aware this may not be 100% effective, or that I may have already been infected and not know it, or that the protection may only be temporary, or that some future Covid mutant strain may sneak past my immunological defenses. And I imagine there is some time-lag before the full protective coverage of the vaccine kicks in, But there is no point in concerning oneself with factors one has no control over. I've done everything I can do to protect myself, and my wife is in the queue for her 2nd shot, in three weeks. It is out of our hands now, I think this experience has taught me a great deal about how the mind processes threats. It appears to have a lot less to do with the nature of the perceived danger than in anxiety and guilt about how one responds to it. Even with my age, medical condition, and accessibility to the Veteran's Administration program,(not to mention my access to digital communications tech) it has taken me almost a year since I first learned of the danger of this disease before I was able to achieve even this level of protection. And in spite of heroic measures to develop vaccines to combat the virus, half a million of my countrymen have perished from the plague, many of them younger and healthier than myself. At the same place, the pharmacy school, with all those fresh-faced kids in their crisp white lab coats. I wonder if they attend class in those coats, or they were issued specially for the vaccination drive? I look forward to that feeling of no-longer-imminent danger the Mme relates.
