I'm old enough to remember the 2000 elections, and the clusterfuck they entailed. There's a long fight to go before we're through this.

Consider:

1. The pre-ballot polls, and to an extent, the ballots themselves, ultimately mean nothing. By popular vote, Hillary won the last election, but due to the Electorial College (not to mention a few unfaithful electors) the seat went to Trump instead. We may well face that this year as well.

2. We're dealing with a man here who famously stated during the 2016 elections that "I'll accept the results... if I win. To my knowledge, the election only officially ends when one side concedes defeat (I'll find a source tomorrow). Even if it isn't close enough for Trump to pull a 2000 (hence the above mention), he could still delay matters by being a stubborn ass.

3. Should Biden win, and Trump somehow concede, he still has a whole three months in office left to be spiteful as hell. If there's anything left standing in the Federal structure during this time, you can bet your ass he'll do his damndest to tear it down (and blame it on the democrats, of course). This leads me to...

4. Even if Trump loses, he is still eligible for reelection. 2016 wasn't the first time he ran for office, and should he lose this year, it won't be the last time he runs either. Being an ex-president, he strikes me as the obvious republican choice for nomination in coming years. Chances are, we could be seeing a second Grover Cleveland in 2024...

Band together, hunker down, and stay the course, ladies and gents. This ride's just getting started.

there is no certainty what will happen next.

If he loses, there will still be a massive clean-up job and mopping-up operation. And how that goes will depend on the down-ballot results. None of the problems we have now will suddenly go away if Biden wins. And a lot of other things can go wrong. The GOP will be much weakened, but they will not be out and will be determined to cause trouble. The Dems will be tempted to get distracted, overreach and under-perform because, after all, that's what Democrats do. Biden is a good man, but I believe he's well past his prime, and I have my doubts about Harris.

And if Trump wins, well, I think we both agree on how that will turn out. He will feel justified, secure, unchained. And he will settle a lot of old scores as well as consolidate his position. America will never be the same again, but it will look a lot like the America of the first decades of the Gilded Age--but we'll be on the way down, not on the way up. And before he runs again, there will be a real brawl to select his replacement. We know the kind of people that have flourished under his administration; Cruz, Graham, Barr, Cotton, Pompeo, McConnel, Nunes. Perhaps none of them, but someone much like them. It will be a bloodbath.

Take solace in the fate of Asimov's Mule...

The only thing that is certain is that if Trump loses, either by a little or a landslide he will challenge the results, do all in his power to nullify the results, and if that fails he will call on his followers to fight for him in the streets if he thinks it will help him...

It is almost certain that- no matter the count at midnite of Nov 3rd, or how many votes remain uncounted- Trump will declare victory.

It will be fun to see what his faithful followers like Rob will do... will they put it all on the line for their 'man'?

:) If Rob does, I will post his mug shot or obituary here- whichever comes first...

I don't anticipate FranckC and SteveS will take up arms when called on to by Trump- but only because they don't make Depends Undergarments™ in camouflage.

The worst case is if the results are close enough that the supreme court could be brought in to nullify enough votes to give it to Trump.

If Trump wins 4 more years, it is game over for democracy in America. Both sides know it, only one side cares.
