This isn't accidental, or done purely out of their stupidity... They learned one lesson from history- Chaos is the fascist's friend. When there is great turmoil and fear, the fascists are always the ones most well placed to benefit. When people are desperate they will more easily accept the fascist's desperate measures. They have made a calculation, and have determined that the road that most likely leads to them holding power is also paved with the bodies of 100's of thousands of Americans. They are ok with that - what are a few bumps in the road if the destination is power?
