So near...and yet so far May 6, 2020 11:12 am hank

The nearest known black hole to earth (about 1100 ly) was recently discovered, orbiting the star HR 6819, also known as HD 167128 in the constellation Telescopium, visible only to Southern Hemisphere observers.

This is a double star located at RA 18h 17m and DEC -56d 01′. This star is just visible to the naked eye on a dark, clear night.

This object is probably a supernova remnant, all that remains of a star that once orbited this system in the distant past.
