SpaceX purposeful abort test January 20, 2020 3:57 pm SDG

I have an app on my phone that alerts me to when there is a new launch.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nicedayapps.iss_free

It does so much more than just telling you when ISS is overhead though. Sunday morning I got a notification saying SpaceX was about to launch. I remembered this was the launch where they were going to test the abort and recovery of the crew capsule. Quickly I opened the app and watched. It was so great, I woould have missed it without the notification. What a heady time we live in.

It was strange seeing the cheers as the rocket exploded. Brought me back to another January launch. January 28 1986 to be exact. I was a 5th grader space nerd. I watched that launch live as well from my classroom. No cheers that day, but plenty of tears. RIP Challenger crew, Good Luck Space X. Hopefully with the safetys built into the Crew Module we will have more cheers and less tears in the future.
