There are no good people standing on the side of white supremacists, it is foolish and dangerous to pretend otherwise.

But after repeatedly claiming the shootings were a mental health issue, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/15/politics/trump-gun-legislation-mental-health/index.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Trump made it EASIER for the mentally ill to get guns</a>...

We couldn't even get republicans to support <a href="https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-gun-votes-20160620-snap-story.html " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">barring those on the no-fly list from buying guns</a>

Background checks would help, but <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/08/04/mass-shootings-what-congress-doing-gun-control/1916451001/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">McConnell will not even allow a vote on the topic.</a>

We could institute meaningful restrictions on the TYPE of guns that it is legal to own. Guns are being manufactured and advertised as efficient machines for killing large numbers of people quickly...

But instead, any 'lefty' proposing ANY common-sense measures is literally targeted by the republicans- with some making statements about 'second amendment remedies' to remove the troublesome lefty.

There is one party standing in the way of doing ANYTHING to address the problem... hell, t<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2018/02/gun-violence-public-health/553430/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">he CDC was FORBIDDEN from even studying the issue of gun violence</a> thanks to Republican Jay Dickey...

One thing that will help is the destruction of the NRA- Thankfully the NRA seems well on the way to dismantling itself.

I won't deny that the democrats in congress have lacked the backbone on this issue- they should have fought harder even if there was no hope of getting it passed. Sometimes you must take up a lost cause, if only to make it clear to history which side you stood on...

As you may know, I am a firearms enthusiast myself, I own several. I own them for sport, and for self-defense. But I am also in favor of background checks, magazine capacity restrictions, silencer and automatic fire bans, strict licensing, and other issues considered "gun control", for much the same reasons you do.

But the "gun issue" doesn't have much to do with constitutional questions or citizen's rights. The Second Amendment allows the states to maintain armed militias for keeping down civil unrest, Indian uprisings and slave revolts. That is, organized and disciplined troops levied from the local population (the founders did not like national armies), NOT automatic rifles in every house. All the modern interpretations of the 2ndAm are about business, not security.

Guns are durable goods, if taken care of, they pretty much last forever; they can be passed down from father to son for generations--particularly when they are used primarily for hunting, self-defense or farm use. Because of this, the market for firearms quickly becomes saturated; as a nation, we simply don't need that many.

But by convincing the population that they need firearms to defend themselves from foreign armies, the government, the Deep State, black gangs, Mexican druggies, Zombies or other fantasies, we ensure a constant demand for more, and better guns. And its a self-fulfilling prophecy. As more guns are built, more varied models, they become cheaper and become readily available, the bad guys become a greater threat, and the good guys need more of them. They become a consumer item, and are marketed as such.

Follow the money, this is about selling guns, not owning them, and the gun industry now has its own lobbies and infrastructure and its own press, (not to mention legislative champions) all designed to keep the consumer buying. He is fed fear and insecurity. Guns are a sex surrogate too, just like V-8 cars and household goods. It makes little men feel like big men, and now they have a self-righteous reason to feel that way.

There are no easy answers, but there are none when discussion fails. There are no "sides" in this, merely the indifference to act. It is past time for our elected politicians to drop the "I need to keep my voters fat-n-happy" attitude and speak of this epidemic, at least to each other.

Yes, he put me, my late wife, my three children and my grandson in his manifest. I don’t much like that.

As it stands, America is slowly PCing its path to the grave. Open, plan, clear talk is needed. As I type, a striking majority of Americans are open to weapons background checks, but our senators seem to think the voting population is too lazy to put in the effort at the polls to win. That striking majority, according to the political talking heads this morning, is above 80 percent.

I do not see how a mental background check to keep weapons out of the hands of nut-jobs in any way infringes on the original intent of the 2nd Amendment. The “well regulated Militia” is here in our militaries. The “…right of the people to keep and bear Arms…” was written for a different people of a different place and a different time. We are here and now.

Things change, always do.

A right to bear arms does not mean a requirement to bear arms, but do I and my family now need to purchase firearms just to survive living in our own country, to step outside and greet a neighbor, to check the mailbox?

For those who may require a reference:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

This amendment, misused, is simply a stupid person’s license to kill. That stupid person with a gun simply needs to be disarmed.

Not a solution, but it's a step. A true solution is far too complicated to imagine, even for the august company I have found at this site, but no solution is ever found without someone taking that first step.
