Any sort of trial or criminal charges would tear the country apart. No matter how airtight the case against him was, his followers would never accept it, they would see it all as a Deep State plot by Soros, Hillary and the Illuminati and it would justify their going out into the street to start the Redneck Revolution.

And don’t forget, they have all the guns. They have been talking themselves up for this for years, with the help of the NRA, and I am convinced they will do it in a heartbeat. These rubes are dying for an excuse to go out and kill somebody so they can feel all Christian and patriotic about it.

However, before he gets a pardon, he has to go on TV and confess his crimes and accept responsibility for them. And he needs to provide details, that can be fact-checked. It may not satisfy the Deplorables, but it will make it that much harder to rewrite history later.
