One year by itself tells you nothing.  Just because we didn&#039;t break the 2007 and 2012 records this year doesn&#039;t mean the problem is over. Look at the overall trend.

See for yourself how this year&#039;s average September ice extent compares to other years.

Besides, the issue isn&#039;t the volume of Arctic sea ice.  Its only a thin crust floating over a deep ocean. What matters is the area of floating ice in summer, because its what keeps sunlight from penetrating the sea and warming it up, making it harder to freeze again the following winter.
