Because of my age, and the vital role Medicare plays in my own dignity and prosperity as an old fart, this is a direct attack on me. Having said that, and giving you fair warning that I have a personal interest and financial stake in this debate, let us go on and deconstruct that statement. Why doesn't Trump just come out in opposition to Medicare altogether? After all, that is the most "Socialist" of all government programs. And abolishing Socialism is the centerpiece of Conservative philosophy.

You know why. The Deplorables know they will some day come to depend on Medicare, if they don't do so already. If Trump and his gang actually came out and tried to get rid of Medicare they'd be voted out of office in a heartbeat, by their own base.
We've seen this hypocrisy from Conservatives before. Farmers are all about free enterprise, unless its their price supports that are withdrawn. Businessmen favor competition and free markets until their protective tariffs and subsidies (and tax breaks) are threatened. Investors think the Almighty himself has guaranteed their Capital Gains. The Babbitry resents paying high taxes for inferior public schools, but are perfectly willing to demand taxpayer-funded vouchers for the private academies only they can afford to send their kids to. The Right isn't opposed to Socialism, its only Socialism that doesn't benefit them that they have a problem with.

Personally, I believe a society's medical bills, like its educational bills, should be paid by the WHOLE society. Medicine is a public health issue, like waste disposal, sewage treatment, or water purification. Everybody wins, everybody should pay. We all benefit by living in a healthy society, even if we're not sick ourselves, just like we all benefit by living in an educated society, even if we are functionally illiterate ourselves. This is certainly the philosophy we adhere to when it comes to State force and coercion: cops, courts, jails, and the military. Its how we finance public works, the fire department, roads, and sports stadiums. Why not hospitals and schools? And why not medical schools? Education should be rationed by examination grades, not by tuition.

However, if the cost of taking care of the sick and the poor, and of the education of our youth, is too high, if the society simply can't afford it, then we're going to have to find another way to ration those benefits. With medical and educational services, we do that already. If you can't afford the services, (or the insurance) you don't get as much...except, of course, those services that use violence to protect the property, labor resources, markets and raw materials that benefit the wealthy.

Demand is infinite, and resources are finite. Sooner or later we have to ration. But if everybody benefits from a service, then everybody should pay. And everybody should be rationed when the time comes---by the same amount. Why should my children die and yours live simply because you can afford it? Who the fuck do you think you are?

The Conservative program is to deprive the population of those services that will allow them to improve their own position. Only those who can afford the price of admission will get to play in their lofty game. And those who don't, have little choice but to go to work for those who do in an effort to claw their way out of the hole. This keeps jobs scarce and wages low and the rich richer at the expense of the poorer. Just enough people, who through sheer luck, exceptional skill, or (as in my case) Socialist welfare policies, get past this barrier
that it justifies keeping it in place intact, indefinitely. <em>"Hey, you made out all right, why are YOU complaining?"

"My grandfathers stole this land from the Indians, my fathers made it productive by bringing in slaves, I made it profitable by destroying the environment and manipulating immigration and bringing in cheap labor, therefore I am entitled to its bounty, as are my children and posterity, in perpetuity. What are you, some kinda Socialist? Get a job, hippie scum!"</em>
