But I do remember the final scene. Hitler and Eva Braun have just committed suicide, and a Nazi officer walks into a conference room where several other bunker officials and staff are congregated. "The Fuhrer is dead.", he solemnly announces. There is a long period of immobility and silence. Everyone stands still, only their eyes darting back and forth, as if seeking permission from each other, wondering if they are now released from their vows. Outside, the rumble of Soviet artillery seems louder, closer. Then, altogether, as if on a signal, everyone in the room pulls out a pack of cigarettes, lights one up and takes a long, luxuriant drag, and simultaneously exhales.
