If a senior staffer of impeccable reputation and recognized competence realizes the President is incapable of doing his job and the nation is in real danger, then it is his duty to resign, and go public with his observations in the hope the president is removed from office before serious damage is done to the nation.

To remain in office as a top aide in the hope of "managing" a nutjob President is no service to the country, or even to the President. President Trump may very well be a sick man, and not responsible for his actions.

Kelly is a military officer, and military discipline requires that the orders of a superior officer be carried out, even if one is convinced they are insane. The only alternative is to go to your superior's superior and present your case, although that will probably mean the destruction of your career even if you are eventually proven to be right. The President's "superior" is the Congress, and the American people. This is what the Caine Mutiny is all about. But Kelly is not in the chain of command. He's a civilian, he is under no obligation to be loyal to a man who's principles he supposedly finds indefensible.

There are only two reasons to continue serving a boss who doesn't know what he's doing and could conceivably lead the country or even the world to disaster.

1) You sincerely agree with the President and his competence and honesty and feel it is your duty to help him in any way you can to implement his policies.

2) You don't care whether or not he's capable (or even rational) and you don't care what happens to the country, you're only in it for your own career.

To continue to support and protect a President that you are convinced is a danger to American peace, prosperity and liberty (which is what your references allude to are Mr Kelly's actions) is irresponsible at best, reprehensible at worst.

And it need not be an ideological dilemma, either. If Trump were to be removed from office the Vice-President would still support conservative policies and Conservatives would still hold their majorities in government, legislature, courts, state and local offices. Its not like the government would be handed overnight to Barack and Hillary. There is no valid reason for any honorable conservative
who cannot accept Trump to continue to support him. Conservative principles would still guide government policy--at least until the voters decided otherwise.

Of course, that assumes there are still any honorable conservatives left in government. I know how tempting the tax cut, regulatory "reform", a gutted EPA and no Obamacare must be for them. And they have their eyes set on entitlements, next. They've wanted this for so long they are obviously willing to pay whatever price it takes to get it.

Even a mad and criminal President.
