This passage has always caught my eye. Not only from its timeless wisdom; but also that it is also almost verbatim from the Akallabêth, from the Silmarillion about the downfall of the Númenóreans, who founded Gondor. History repeating itself, even in this fictional mythology. If you didn't find yourself wading through all of the Silmarillion, do yourself a favor and read this portion - it is really instructive to understanding Aragorn's role in LOTR, his feeling of the weight of his ancestry and his familial relationship to Elrond.
