The average (1979-2017) summer sea ice volume is about 11 thousand cubic kilometers. Lately, the summer Arctic sea ice has been dropping down to about 4 thousand cubic kilometers. We may see an ice free summer Arctic in our lifetimes. Our kids may see an ice free Arctic all year round in theirs.

The summer surface area of Arctic sea ice has dropped to about a half. The total amount (volume) of summer ice has dropped to about a third.
