Its sad that a franchise that so influenced the future is so desperately trying to play catchup by mimicking the current leaders.

I'm a Cord Cutter here as well. Literally the only thing I've watched live in the past year was the NCAA Men's basketball championship and the superbowl. Obviously I'm not a sports nut, but when your local teams make it big, you feel a bit of pull to at least watch.

I even had an active cable subscription for much of the last year. Still didn't watch it at all. TWC practically begged us to have cable by lowering our Internet rates by bundling in basic cable. Its ridiculous that these dinosaurs are so desperate to show a subscription base they will give it away just to pad the viewership numbers. Its a ruse that can't hold out too much longer.

I'm enjoying The Expanse on Amazon Prime as it comes out. There are plenty of gems in the Amazon and Netflix Originals to keep me entertained. But that's my limit. My budget can't handle all of the services out there. Hulu already got the ax. HBO Go was never an option. CBS Access is simply too late to the party and can't catch up now.

Add all these up and it costs the same as cable if not more. I'm a cheapskate, so perhaps there is enough market out there for CBS to make a go of it. I just wish they weren't using ST:D as their sledgehammer to influence the market. Star Trek is a pearl that shouldn't be dragged through the mud like that.

Make the show, then make it as accessible to everyone possible in any delivery method that works and still allows the creators to get paid. Then make more shows rinse, repeat.

I suppose these things have a shelf life. I didn't dislike the new Trek movies, not at all, but I still think First Contact marks the franchise's high-water mark.

OTOH, I think Rogue One is the new jewel in the Star Wars crown...easily, and by no small margin, the best movie to yet come to us from that universe. IMHO.

You know that eventually enough clips will leak out that we can judge whether the show is any good, without paying up front. And if it's any good, eventually the show will be licensed to Netflix or Amazon or Hulu or iTunes. Especially if enough people indicate they'd watch the show if it weren't being held ransom to launch a pay service.

I think I'm open to being impressed by a new Star Trek, but this one is handicapped from the beginning by the strings attached. Then there are the reports of production snafus, suggesting the result may be some kind of Frankenstein.

So I'm gonna just stand on the sidelines here, and watch the situation play out.

Can't shake the feeling that all these old dinosaurs are just going to use more and more force to try to impose their way of thinking on the market. As a cord-cutter I hate bundles, "cord" is a metaphor for a bundle of services; a "network" is a bundle of shows. And like you, the coercion implicit in the bundle, and tying it to a new Star Trek, was plenty to kill any enthusiasm I might have for ST:D. On balance, it ain't worth it.

A new incarnation of Star Trek used to be a real treat, something worth looking forward to. But like Star Wars, and Alien, and so many of these other franchises, the thrill seems to be gone.

A ground-breaking new concept opens up a new universe for us, we want to go back again and again. But after a while, the discoverers, explorers and surveyors thoroughly map the new terrain and the settlers, land agents, missionaries and carpetbaggers start moving in.

Its time to move on.

Like you, I'm a little bit "meh" about this one. It'd be nice if it eventually made it to Netflix or one of the other streaming services. We'll see.

I'd was actually far more excited about an independent Trek production called Prelude to Axanar, which was showcased online in a *spectacular* promo trailer a few years ago. Unfortunately, CBS squashed it in court...which was of course their legal right. Had I been an executive at the network, though, I'd have strongly recommended that the team behind Axanar be hired to create the new series. Oh well.
