Podrock have you used any of this stuff on opentopography? I'm interested how it compares to Pix4D. I'm wanting to start capturing topographical imagry using a quadcopter, but Pix4D has a pretty steep entry point. Looking at other options to explore the viability before spending the big bucks. Outputting geotiffs and 3d meshes and pointclouds are what I'm most interested in.

terragen

It's not primarily a scientific tool, but it'll import geographic data (at least it would when I played with the beta release years ago). There's a free version for non-commercial work.

Let me know... once you have the grayscale elevation map it takes a minute to make the model... mapping an image onto the terrain (assuming it is matched to the elevation map you used) would take a minute...

How would you get a satellite image that can be correctly overlayed on the elevation map?

I've had the pro version since

the day after Atlast was bought by Google. Funny story, that, it includes a party in a bar with a guy with a parrot. Nevermind.

You can still get a free version through Trimble.

Draping overlays on terrain is one of the best things about SketchUp. It's not hard, there are tutorials out there. Import, align, use as material, explode surface, create material, paint bucket, yada, yada...

Back when it was free I did a very similar model to illustrate the 'hazard zone' of a laser for the FAA... a volume of airspace the laser could point to (all possible angles where the moon could be over the course of a year) where the laser intensity was over a limiting value. It took a very long time to do.

I never knew you could do the terrain overlay... how hard was that in sketch up?

North Carolina

Nice! Here's what I've been playing with:

Screen shot from SketchUp model to determine minimal forest clearing for maximum solar exposure at building site.

Glad I could help work the problem.

Funny, earlier this year I created a horizon study coupled with solar angles for a property in a valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Used AutoCad and SketchUp. There are many ways to approach this; I'm curious to hear how you are doing it on a new thread.
