tried several browsers on different computers and SyFy has shut me out before I could watch Episode 6. Damn. Looks like the season pass is cheaper on Google Play than Amazon, but since money's tight right now its going to have to wait.

Not just a matter of a flash-crash or any technical problem. This is what I see trying to view Expanse on syfy.com through Firefox or Chrome:

Unfortunately, this network is not included in your current XFINITY TV service.

The network you are trying to watch through TV Everywhere must be part of your XFINITY TV service.*

    Chat with us.

If you have any questions on TV Everywhere, see our FAQs or call 1-800-XFINITY FREE.

Thank you for being an XFINITY customer!

* An XFINITY registered set-top box is also required

After reading that both you guys had it work with IE, I tried IE. It worked.

All this time I could have streamed "The Expanse" online for free, instead of paying through the nose for it.

Sigh. See what I mean about a crazy patchwork of systems and licenses? It's crazy that a single browser has the power to tunnel through all those access-control systems to get at the free video. Wow.

Thanks for posting your experiences, guys, it pointed me in the right direction. Ultimately.

I do run adblock plus as a chrome extension, but I didn't think it would block those. When I log in with IE I do get the ads however.

Just checked to see if I can watch The Expanse online. No problem with either episode 1 or 4. No log in, no charges, just click, endure the ad, and watch.

Saving it for later binging.

Currently using Windstream DSL

Naturally, as a cord-cutter, I'm very interested in figuring out where I can watch stuff given the crazy patchwork of licenses and business deals in the US. Things are a lot simpler in other countries.

It gets pretty ludicrous sometimes. The little AMC network, usually part of basic cable, happens to own BBC America, the premium channel with exclusive rights to Doctor Who, among other A-list BBC programming. There must be a Who fan running AMC's web site, because the Monday after a Who episode airs on premium cable, you can watch it on amc.com with only basic cable. (You're welcome.)

I think there's something similar going on with the USA Network and "Expanse", because NBC owns USA and Syfy. I haven't figured out the system, though, and so far I've only found the first free episode on USA. But hope springs eternal.

I think that there's some kind of similar licensing snafu going on that lets some people view "Expanse" on syfy.com and others not. I first heard about it in an online article that was absolutely sure that syfy.com had dropped the episodes for everybody, which probably just means the author was one of the lucky ones.

Enquiring minds want to know what you find out visiting your brother this weekend. Please keep me posted.

I just checked syfy.com from work and it loads the episodes right up.

My internet comes through TWC at home and Comcast at work, but there isn't any cable television subscription attached to either and never has been.

Maybe they are checking the IP source and if it comes through TWC or comcast it bypasses the login requirement. I'll be on my brother's internet this weekend which isn't tied to a cable service. I'll try it on his to see if there is a login requirement.
