Frank Herbert (Dune)
Great post. I enjoyed reading it. And agree. However- - -
I believe mankind is genetically predisposed to conflict, to trying to be first, number one, dominating and cannot get away from that. Just as capitalism is doomed to failure the more successful it becomes. Soon the wealth will be so concentrated in the hands of the few there will be huge problems. Mankind is nearing the place where the means of asserting oneself have become so destructive we will eventually wipe ourselves off the face of the Earth. We have come close several times already. All that saved us was a bit of corruption in Chicago that swung the election to Kennedy, for instance. Nixon would have blundered into a nuclear war. It's going to happen, and then evolution can work it's magic and start the next great development.

It was 1964. I studied astronomy. The Beatles had just come out, JFK had just been shot, the Civil Rights movement was just getting started. The Klan was burning crosses every Saturday night in a field not too far from my house. And the first American Boots were wading in the rice paddies of Viet Nam. "None Dare Call it Treason" was a national bestseller.

The big debate in astronomy was whether the Big Bang or Steady State was right. Plate tectonics was just catching on. And although I had heard about this new discovery about "DNA", I was not quite sure what it was all about. I kept on confusing it with "LSD". I took my first Fortran course that year.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFTLKWw542g" rel="nofollow">But we didn't start the fire.</a>
