The August Arctic September 2, 2015 3:23 pm ER

http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/files/2015/09/monthly_ice_08_NH-350×270.png

.

Arctic sea ice extent averaged for August 2015 was the fourth lowest in the satellite data record. Through 2015, the linear rate of decline for August extent is 10.3% per decade.

Arctic sea ice extent will bottom out in mid-September, and then start climbing back up as the Sun heads South. These NSIDC maps I publish every month are for the average for that whole month, (as opposed to the lowest ice day in that month).

The September average, which I will publish early next October, will probably not break the 2012 low ice record, but I suspect it will be close.
