Arctic sea ice extent for May averaged 12.78 million square kilometers. This is 610,000 square kilometers below the 1981 to 2010 average for the month. May 2014 is now the third lowest May extent in the satellite record.

Sept, 2012 was the record low summer ice since satellite records have been available. Although the ice extent is lower now than it was in May of 2012, unusually favorable ice-forming conditions this winter make it unlikely the record will be broken again this September. Still, it promises to be well below average.
