When your only tool is a shovel the solution to every problem is to dig a bigger hole. The US only has a military for dealing with problems anymore. Conservatives suggest that if the US doesn't confront every problem with military force we are weak, failures and aren't protecting "American interests". And that military simply isn't effective the way warfare has evolved. It's a military designed for the first part of the 20th century and is getting it's ass whipped wherever it goes, it seems. But rather than be seen as weak, the politicians can send in troops to kill and be killed. And then wonder why Americans are attacked. Blame someone else for it. They should love us.
