Fun with my new Droid May 30, 2012 3:38 pm Robert
Endomondo-TelegraphRoad

I’ve talked about my new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ Android tablet. I’m one of those people who suffers buyer’s remorse a majority of the time, but it doesn’t look like this is going to be one of them. That little sucker is fun!

I have this app called “Endomondo” that’s like a pedometer designed by StarFleet Engineering: Uses GPS to track where I walk and computes mph and distance and even estimates calories burned, and plots the results on a Google map. There’s an optional synthesized voice that’s supposed to encourage me to walk faster, but I draw the line at being hectored by a machine (besides, I’d rather listen to my war-dialer app try to pronounce all the funny names people give their wi-fi systems as I walk past them. But I digress…). I usually listen to music anyway…

…and check this out: It tracks what’s playing on the MP3 player:

What a hoot! I know there are a couple of Dire Straits fans in the audience (I was listening to Alchemy disc 2, for the fans), so you know that Telegraph Road is an anthem, so no surprise that I marched fairly fast. And “Brothers in Arms” is that beautiful but mournfully sad ballad about a dying soldier. Pretty dramatic difference in the way the two soundtracks set my pace.

Can’t blame it all on Mark Knoppfler, though. See that knot in the upper right that looks like I’m dancing across the roof of an office building? That’s a grocery store, went inside (blue line), it tracked me up and down the aisles, and I exited (red line) with 20 pounds of groceries on my back. See also the limitations of GPS: I didn’t really make a beeline across a strip mall and two rows of houses. I behaved myself, no superpowers, I promise.

Just me and my trusty little Droid.
