Ever since Bush announced the end of the Taliban in Afghanistan, these stories pop up regularly.  The recent coordinated attacks by the Taliban which reflected a huge intelligence failure are forgotten.  Or maybe these stories are planted as a response, in order to maintain some semblance of public support.

“KABUL, Afghanistan — It has not been a good month for the Taliban. Thursday night, the organization’s El Emara website was hacked twice, causing much humiliation, with the hackers substituting propaganda with photographs of Taliban atrocities and pro-Afghan government and coalition slogans.

“The hack was only one of a series of recent events suggesting the militant group has fallen on tough times or even reached a crisis point.”

Terrible from an American point of view is the announcement that 20% of NATO casualties are caused by Afghani troops, the folks supposed to be on our side.  That’s their way of saying “get the hell out of here”, and it’s from our friends.

“The fatal shooting during a joint night raid Thursday marks the first killing of a U.S. Special Forces operative by one of the elite, highly trained Afghan commandos, who are meant to be more carefully vetted than their conventional force counterparts. Largely as a result, the commandos have been widely praised by U.S. forces for their competence.”

We’ve heart the work “rogue” ad nauseum.  Unless the entire countryside is filled with “rogues” there’s something systemic about this.

If I visited someone, and they begged me to come in, and then took a shot at me, I’d leave.  I’d consider my welcome worn out, and that it would be in everyone’s best interests.  I’d leave the bottle of wine behind.  I’d just vamoose.  Simple, huh?
