Poor Lee.

He comes in like Steppenwolf, and goes out like Wile E Coyote.

We need another board. One for "Humor". And Lee could start it.

The fellow with more stereotypes than Sony's record collection is complaining. My guess is that Lee wants a monopoly on them, considers it encroachment of someone else hints at one.

That's a bit like me complaining of sarcasm, Lee.

Isn't that the very definition of satire? You can poke fun at New York Liberal Jews (like Woody Allen does, and he IS one!), cops (Car 54 and Police Academy), potheads (Cheech and Chong), hippies (the Great Lebowski), Rockers (Spinal Tap), gays (Will and Grace), college students( Animal House) and so on.

Comedy is fair game, even if its mean spirited. Racism is not.

Does this mean it's okay to ridicule or satirize any group that's a matter of personal choice?

That's not a valid analogy.

Hispanic Bastards are Hispanics. There's nothing they can do to avoid being Hispanic. In many cases, there's nothing they can do to even avoid looking Hispanic, even if they were raised by apes in the rain forest.

Greedy Christian Bitches aren't necessarily white, and if they are, that's not why they are GCBs. And there's a lot of white people who aren't GCBs, either. GCBs can even have children, parents, spouses or siblings who are not GCBs. Its a matter of choice, not blood.

There's a difference between ridiculing or satirizing what a person has become, how he acts or behaves or believes, and despising their DNA.

And let's be honest Tom, I know you're no racist, but isn't "Liberal culture" one of your "big, aching raw nerves". And I think you sense that GCBs, whom I'm sure you have nothing in common with, are still associated with Conservatism as potential political allies. Like Lee, you're ready to diagram Liberal sentences and parse Liberal words to the phoneme level to root out the comeback gotcha that will expose their hypocrisy. Sorry, no cigar on this one.

I think that answers Lee's question just fine.

Doesn't really answer his question, does it?

Liberal culture is one, big, aching raw nerve when it comes to even the most superficial stereotypes of any group on their "favored" list. Hell, figuring out ways in which some group is being "offended" is practically a full-time job for some people.

Not really a problem for them when it comes to groups they don't like.

Somebody in Hollywood proposing a comedy called "Those Hispanic Bastards" would be flayed alive and dragged across the Utah Salt Flats behind a team of horses. Wouldn't really matter if they changed it to "THB."

A little perspective: It's television.

And it's fiction, not a documentary. Fictional entertainment is all about assembling a pack of archetypes/stereotypes and putting them through their paces.

I once had a bizarre argument with a Hollywood special effects engineer about this. She thought it was dishonest and all-around despicable that movies took the shortcut of relying on well-known archetypes instead of spending hours or even days developing each character's unique and "special" life story...before even beginning the story to be told.

Silly is a polite word for that attitude. Would you sit through hours of character development back story before you're permitted to experience the story you came to see? Of course not. You jumpstart your understanding of the story with a basic understanding of the characters and their intrinisic attitudes and world views.

You can't tell stories without archetypes and their misidentified cousins the stereotypes. You're stretching the point to ridiculous extremes to gin up an argument.

Well, I stereotype. I just don't vocalize it.

Stereotypes come about for a reason.

The point I'm trying to make is that stereotypes are always less appropriate when applied to people like us, than when applied to people like them.

Hey, I've got no prejudice against white folks. I married one.

In the past, whether or not a stereotype was actually "common" or not usually had little to do with how appropriate it was.
