The problem is that people like that have no ability to "draw a line." It's like the people who did some real good stopping factories from dumping toxic waste into rivers, but are now trying to outlaw substances at molecular levels. There's no such thing for them as "going too far." We've had laws against abusing higher animals for years.

My Mama used to say that about me--that someone was feeding me Mexican Jumping Beans. So I put grasshoppers in my pocket and when Mama went to check to see where the brown stain was coming from...

She was never the same after that.

Oh, and she never went through my pockets again.

Um, ok. You know I wasn't just addressing the issue of the goldfish.

So we leave it up to the individual. And if some guys says "I enjoy driving nails into the heads of cats and dogs, but I'd never hurt my horse," then that's where he draws the line, and it's all good.

When my kids were little, I'd swear somebody was feeding them crickets. Or Mexican jumping beans.

Good God, these are goldfish. We're not talking hundred-dollar koi here. I go the pet store, and the feeder fish swim by the hundreds in big tanks. Their sole destiny in life is to be fed to things that eat little fish. I bought them now and then to feed a pet crayfish, just like I bought live crickets to feed my kids' lizards and frogs. I do have arbitrary limits here. I draw the line at feeding live mice to snakes, although I know plenty of people do it. In fact we raised a live mouse and rat to a peaceful death by old age because my daughter "rescued" them from being snake food. The rescue zoo I went to up at Big Bear used frozen mice for their snakes. I guess you can train a snake to eat them.

Well, how about this: stricter punishment for cruelty to animals. An end to the notion that domestic animals are simply property and can be treated any old way the owner wants to treat them?

I know you're a soft touch when it comes to animals, TB, but many people aren't and I don't think they should be given free reign to cause suffering.
