<blockquote>"Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that. My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. We've got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what may come of that." - Perry</blockquote>

Not exactly a ringing call for secession. Incidentally, he's wrong about Texas having the right to leave the union in the first place, although he's right in that it was an issue. But the original deal annexing Texas didn't say that. Later, and a court decision in 1869 confirmed that Texas could not secede. In fact, the court ruled that Texas never really seceded in the first place. Long story.

There are probably fifty reasons you don't think he should be president, chief among them that he's not a liberal Democrat.

The man advocated texas secession from the union. How anyone who did that could be considered a viable candidate is unfathomable.

I don't know that much about the guy yet, either. You might find this hard to believe, but I can't work myself up much at this point about November of 2012.

I located a <a href="http://blog.4president.org/2012/2011/02/rga-chairman-rick-perrys-cpac-remarks-as-prepared-for-delivery-cpac11.html" rel="nofollow">link to Perry's 2011 CPAC speech.</a> It's always good to see what a politician says when he's preaching to the choir. I learn a lot about Democrats from things they say when the conservatives and moderates aren't around.

I like this stuff in written form, without the cheers, hand-waving, and other visual and verbal gimmicks. Anybody who prefers an audio can usually find a copy somewhere.

He's been re-elected three times as Texas governor, holding that office longer than any other Texas governor. Implies he's doing something right. Well, at least as far as Texans are concerned.

It's easy to forget the cycles just in our own lifetime. Or remember how, during both the good times and the bad ones, it was always somehow assumed that this particular state of affairs would go on forever.

He's well-spoken, seems entirely genuine, is brash without being abrasive, has experience and a very impressive record.

Yeah, if Perry declares, Obama's going to hafta walk on water, maybe cure some lepers. And even then...

I hope you're right, Tom. Because if you're not, this country is finished.

It's all about performance and accomplishment. And ideas, which, when you think about it, end up being inseparable from performance and accomplishment. The last election was about economic fundamentals like jobs (real ones), taxes, and spending. Barring some unforeseen circumstance, that's what the next one will be about.

There will always be a minority on either side who will vote the party line no matter what, but they don't have the numbers to win elections by themselves.

Unfortunately, Jody, I don't think America really cares any more about performance or accomplishment. The forces of division and demagoguery have succeeded into splitting us into warring camps forever. It's all about ideology now.

No matter how good or bad a politician's record
may be, his supporters' and opponents' reactions to it will be predictably partisan.

As for myself, I know nothing about Gov Perry, except his unfortunate remarks about secession.

I seem to remember one time that Texas thought about seceding. I think we should let them... quickly.
