I had it done to my son as an infant, and they did indeed use a locally injected dermal anesthetic, similar to what they’d give you for getting stitches. I noticed no particular discomfort on his part at the time (other than the shot), and the annoyance at being restrained from moving. I don’t know what the traditions are for using anesthetics for religious circumcisions.

I’ve often wondered about the moral rightness of circumcision. It is performed without anesthetic, (considered too risky for infants, even surgery is often performed on babies with no anesthetic)so it is excruciatingly painful, but of course the victims do not remember.

In the postwar period, circumcision was quite common for supposed hygienic reasons. I was circumcised in a hospital, although my family was definitely not Jewish. But I don’t remember, and I’ve never missed it. These protesters may have a point, but its way low on my list of civic and moral priorities.

We weren’t Catholic, either, but I was baptized. I guess my folks were covering all the bases, just in case.

This Arab dude goes into an unemployment office, looking for a job. When the lady behind the desk asks if he has any skills, he replies that he’s a camel castrator.

“What!?” , she blurts out.

“Camels are livestock in my country, and they sometimes need to be prevented from reproducing to improve the herd.”, he answers.

“But just how do you castrate a camel?”, she asks.

“Well, you spread their hind legs out, stake them to the ground, and come up behind them with two flat rocks and…”, he demonstrates with his hands.

“Ewwww…”, she cringes, “doesn’t that hurt?”

“Not if you don’t get your thumbs caught between the rocks.”

Hey! (rimshot!) Believe it or not, my Mom told me that story.
