What the Federal Budget hath wrought April 25, 2011 7:16 am Eri

Or not wrought to be more precise. Background here: http://www.mercedsunstar.com/2011/03/16/1813676/federal-budget-issues-delay-opening.html

I heard this on the news about three days ago and was going to post and link, but unfortunately, HZ went down and I can no longer easily find the damned link to the story. I’ve provided background above and jotted notes form the news at the time so I could post later when we came back up.

The just negotiated budget does not fund the $28m cost of the opening of this $272m medium security prison. That includes not only the opening but the transferring of prisoners from other facilities.

The cost of not opening? $4m per year to maintain the unused facility plus the 350 plus jobs it would have created plus all the resulting revenue for the area. Not a good budget cut at all. This is what is screwing up the economic recovery, bad decisions by politicians who either don’t care or are too stupid to be serving in their positions are who are bought and paid for.

In this instance, one wonders if part of the reason it isn’t funded is because it’s in California, a Democratic stronghold. Would the Republicans be that petty?
