Some recommended reading...
I'm a huge fan of Brian Greene (The Fabric of the Cosmos
), who's books I highly recommend. He explores modern physics with humor, clarity and both his feet on the ground. (Apparently he too is subject to the effects of gravity.)
In the last century or so, humanity has begun to glimpse aspects of reality that are very difficult for us to reconcile with our daily existence, and some very bright minds are struggling to get a handle on it. (I posted a link a few weeks ago to a video of Neil deGrasse Tyson in which he suggests that, perhaps, the human brain simply isn't up to the task of understanding the universe. If that's the case, I guess we'll have to invent a brain that can.)
