When I was a youngster, the Tampa Amateur Astronomical Society played a big role in satisfying my interest for all things astronomical. I also got a chance to befriend an elderly member who had an observatory with 10'' refractor in his back yard (about an f/12). Amazingly, in those days, dark sky conditions, even in the residential neighborhoods of the city, justified that size instrument in the middle of town. Those days are no longer, I'm afraid. The sight of Saturn though a slow focal ratio 19th century vintage objective that size was unforgettable, and an experience many modern amateurs with big Dobsonians would probably drool over.

I salute you. That is noble and important work you are doing.
