The majority of the public will not know or care about this story.
I was surprised at how much NASA hyped it up. It is interesting
to anyone who has more than a passing interest in astronomy, but
for most people it will be a So what moment at best.
Look on other forums and you will see a lot of people expected it
to be about aliens or black holes or dark matter. A young supernova
was not even in the Top 20 of their lists.
This is like the time a former NASA Administrator about a decade
ago was talking to the public about what they thought NASA
should be doing. He was actually shocked that they didn't care
a wit about the ISS but instead wanted NASA to find alien life.
And NASA still wonders why the public isn't as excited about them
and space exploration as they should be. I certainly don't want
them and science in general to suddenly go nuts trying to appease
the public with all their whims, but they really need to do a better
job not only trying to relate to the people, but to educate them
as well so that in the future, such stories as a very young SN
remnant will have some meaning to them. Especially if they want
future scientists to come along.
I wonder how many people thought that star exploded BECAUSE
of the Civil War? :^)
