I have talked to a number of them who "assured" me that Earth
has the only life in the Universe, because God sent His Only Son
here to save us and nowhere else. Thus, nobody else exists in
the whole wide Cosmos.

For example, see this book:

An astronomer and a theologian argue that Earth is the only
place with life using the veneer of science over a mainly
fundamentalist agenda. Just like the creationists do with
intelligent design.

At these that group will not be happy when alien life of any sort
is found and will no doubt say it is everything from a hoax to the
work of the Devil.

I wonder if any other intelligences out there have to deal with this
same type of ideology, which might be yet another reason we have
yet to find them.

At least this statement by a Vatican astronomer (not the Pope
nor is it an official declaration from the Vatican, please note)
shows a willingness to be open that I feared the Church was
stepping back from these past few years.

And no, this isn't new news. My old catechism book from 1969
says it is okay to assume there are aliens because God can do
anything. Makes life so much easier that way.
