Just a decade before Apollo 11, there was serious talk of the two superpowers
placing their own bases on the Moon, mainly military. Some plans even called
for the "astronauts" (astrosoldiers?) to carry weapons and the bases to control
nuclear missiles.
Ah, those were the days, back when we were men.
So when Apollo 11 said they came in peace for all mankind, they meant it.
No weapons, just bags for collecting rocks.
That's why they had a civilian, Armstrong, step out first in addition to being
the commander, because he Aldrin was military.
As for the famous first words flub, they did try to cover it up by saying the
"a" was lost in radio garbling, but finally everyone had to admit that Armstrong
slipped at the historic moment. Eh, just makes him and the event more human.
By the way, have they found those lost Apollo 11 tapes yet?
