They never did. The very existence of "superdelegates" is a deliberate slap in the face to the average Democratic voter. It says "if we don't like what the plebes come up with, we'll just override it." This wasn't an emergency measure, this was something planned long before the primary process started.
The party is just lucky not many voters have thought it out to that point.
