No matter who wins. For the most part, the political posting here is a personal expression of aggression. Destroy and humiliate your opponent, show them scumbags what for! Put 'em in their place. It's bullying and macho posturing, there's more testosterone than theory to it, it is not political discourse, it's more like grafitti or vandalism, with a dash of good old fashioned bullying thrown in.
And as dudes (the dames are much hipper than we are about this) we know when a personal insult is cast our way, no matter how cleverly its wrapped up in polite language, pristine logic, and meticulous documentation. So we respond in kind. And we have to respond, if we say nothing the insulting posts snarks its way in anyway, looking for a fight. Every unanswered attack is a victory for them, a sign of weakness, a demonstration that once again, they must be right and the opposition is weak and corrupt. So they are entitled to do it some more.
Take your own informal poll and scan the lists, how many hot threads have resulted not from a defensive response to an offensive statement, but as a clear challenge out of the blue, one deliberately and calculatingly designed to piss people off? This ain't about politics, it's about power.
