Space is unforgiving.

All it takes is one mistake.
I guess we're all too numb to say anything worthwhile now...I am.

Re: So is Earth, Jake. Same could be said for anything else.

Condolences to all.

We can't forget the those that are up there in the ISS. Much to do yet.

Space tragedy
Posted by Raoul Lannoy on 2/1/2003 9:28:05 AM

Our condolences go to the relatives of the Columbia astronauts of flight STS 107, also to NASA, to the US and Israel.

It's very likely it happened very suddenly.

What' important too is to understand what happened. But this is going to be very difficult.
It's very important for the continuation of the manned space program.

Raoul

I am disconsolate in the extreme! My condolences go out to the families, NASA, and to all of you here who love the space program. (n/t)

Columbia
Posted by Robert on 2/1/2003 11:23:10 AM

I slept late this morning, and woke up to this. I learned of the news here...thanks, friends.

I guess I'm still in shock, but it's sinking in. President Bush's short message released the first tears, at the point when he was visibly choking back his tears. There will be more, as there were long ago when we lost Challenger.

With tremendous sadness,

What we lost...
Posted by R.L. on 2/1/2003 2:11:37 PM

We lost 7 of the best humans our race had to offer. To be on the shuttle you have to be the best... They came from many places, and backgrounds, but they were the best... this is NOT a national tragedy, but a global one...

Exploration, science... these are the most pure things humans can do... these 7 were willing to risk death to do it- they gave their lives to explore the universe for us... They are heroes... HEROES OF THE GRANDEST KIND... They didnt die trying to oppose a different political ideal... nor did they die trying to kill other humans, they died on a mission to improve humanity... no politics, no religion, just humanity....

These 7 represent the BEST of all we can be... we should, and will, remember them... I hope their names, with others, will be inscribed on a memorial on a planet orbiting a distant star.....

The unknown is dangerous, that is why we explore it... My respect goes to the columbia 7....

I AM sad at the loss, and what it may do to our space program.... But I would happily fly if chosen if the risk was 25% mortality... we are way below that... we need to wake up and accept the risks! And accept that the risks are worth it!

Sad Day

Today is another very sad day.

today and always
Posted by Brian Gyles on 2/1/2003 6:08:31 PM

today I cry for the loss of some important ppl, Why because they show the same values that I seek. we can never replace the explorers that we loses but we can honour them and carry on with the goals they seek.

but today we should pause and give them and there famliy the respect they are due. we will not stop at this hurdle of loss we shall seek and continue to carry there spirt forward.

but today my love my respect my heart goes out to all that need it as my heart is here to share.

A sad day, once more

Re: The work goes on

Last night my wife and I attended our United States Power Squadron *Change of Watch* dinner function and the first order of business was a moment of silence in memory of the Columbia crew. The crowd was indeed somber over the tragedy, but the main speaker reminded everybody that *the work must go on*.

The challenging work ahead will be tough but sometimes the challenge is what is needed to help cope with the stress and stay focused for the difficult task ahead.

Continuing the Dream
Posted by Ruth on 2/2/2003 11:00:30 AM

I felt the same sense of disbelief and unreality as I felt when I first heard the Challenger had exploded on takeoff. It's so easy, with all our successes, to forget how many risks these brave men and women take each time they board a shuttle.

I may sit and watch it all from my comfortable sofa, but I share the dreams of those who take the risks. We need to be in space, we need to reach beyond the known and into the unknown, and we need to explore our universe to discover who we really are.

I feel so much shared grief with those families who lost their heros on Columbia. Such loss is not easily accepted, yet accept it we must.

I've heard people talk about the potential blow to NASA. That made me angry. We should not sacrifice the lives of our best and brightest in vain. We should not give up on the ideals which founded NASA.
